Have you ever heard of plaque? If not, it’s the white, sticky film that grows on the front surfaces of your teeth. If you keep from brushing for a long period of time, you will be able to scrape the surfaces of your teeth and peel off a white layer, which is plaque. This substance is extremely destructive to your smile, and we encourage you to do everything you can to remove it. Our Scott J. Ferguson, DDS team is happy to help you do so by recommending the following things:
· Keep up on oral hygiene: Oral hygiene is the best way to protect your smile from plaque daily. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing will successfully clean your chompers and will help you have a top-notch oral health. As you perform these tasks, please make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash.
· Have a balanced diet: Eating healthy foods will help your body and teeth stay in tip-top shape. So, if you want to prevent plaque growth, please limit your sugar and carbohydrate intake.
· Visit your dentist: Dental cleanings are extremely important, especially because they are the only way to completely remove the plaque from your chompers. So, do your best to stay up to date with your cleanings every six months.
· Replace your toothbrush: Brushing with a worn-down toothbrush will not help you eliminate plaque. In fact, it might even harm your teeth and gums. So, please remember to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.
